I am thrilled with the increased interest I am receiving for the Strengthening Brand America Initiative. It suggests that awareness of the website is increasing and that people are finding value in the content. Thanks to everybody who has taken tome to send me notes of encouragement. It is really motivational and helps me redouble my commitment to the mission.
One question I get fairly often is – Why are you devoting so much time to supporting the Strengthening Brand America website? There are a couple of reasons.
First, I believe that Brand America could and should be a stronger global competitor. I am concerned that Brand EU is increasing market share of global foreign direct investment at our nation’s expense. I am convinced that part of the challenge can be addressed by reapplication of proven product and corporate branding principles to the branding of local communities. Improve the competitiveness of enough communities and in aggregate you strengthen Brand America. It is a grassroots solution to a national challenge.
Second, I am a retired P&G Harley Procter Marketer with professional experience in product, corporate and place branding. As an executive-on-loan from P&G, I was CEO of the Ohio Business Development Coalition – a 501 c(3) company charged with branding the state of Ohio. The OBDC started in late 2005, and Ohio won the Site Selection Magazine Governor’s Cup award in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 (the year I transitioned the OBDC to the new JobsOhio organization). I believe my professional training and track record of success uniquely positions me to help economic development professionals master the skills for effective brand building. Net, I believe I can make a difference and am committed to trying to do so.
Another question I get is – There really is no charge for the information? What’s the catch?
The information is indeed free of charge. The goal is to get as many economic development professionals to use it as possible. And, believe it or not, there is no catch. At the moment, there is no revenue stream supporting my work on the website. Nor are there funds to promote it. I am planning on introducing a corporate sponsorship model to help underwrite the cost of content and promoting the site to the economic development profession. My goal though is to ensure the content remains free to anybody who wants to learn more about effective place branding.
The last questions are 1) How is the website doing? and 2) How can I help?
Let me answer the How can I help? question first.
I rely on word of mouth to create traffic. So, sharing the website link with your colleagues is extremely helpful www.strengtheningbrandamerica.com.
Since I am working to secure corporate sponsorships, join the Strengthening Brand America Group (free) and frequently visiting the website are also a big help. I could also use some testimonials to demonstrate the value of the information. Just send me an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Of course, it is all about content. Therefore you can help by sharing your expertise as a comment on a blog post. The more informed we all become, the better we will all be.
To answer the How is the website doing? question, here is an infographic I created.
What are your thoughts on how to create even more awareness and usage of the website?
