Does Your Governor Deserve Your Vote For Reelection?

Ed BurghardDemocracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

In 36 states this year (2014), residents will be voting in Gubernatorial elections.  Hopefully, they will be making an informed choice based on the incumbent’s performance rather than a choice overly influenced by campaign advertising.

The American Dream State Ranking Report provides insight into how Governors in all 50 states are delivering against the mission of better enabling the American Dream for their residents.  The data identifies those states where it has become easier to achieve the Dream, those states where it has become harder, and the states where there has been no change in the difficulty or ease of achieving the Dream (status quo).

I believe the performance standard for every Governor should be to make it easier for residents to achieve their American Dream.  And. progress against that performance standard is important data for consideration when deciding who to vote for.

States Where It Has Become Easier To Achieve The American Dream

  • New Mexico
  • Delaware
  • Connecticut
  • South Carolina
  • Florida
  • New Hampshire
  • Minnesota
  • Utah
  • Hawaii
  • New Jersey
  • Maryland
  • West Virginia
  • Arizona
  • Kansas
  • South Dakota
  • Missouri
  • Michigan
  • California
  • Mississippi
  • New York
  • Maine
  • Illinois
  • Vermont
  • Washington
  • Oregon
  • Nevada
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Louisiana

In all other states, there has either been no change or it has gotten harder.

How Will You Vote?

Hopefully you will take the time to read the Report and understand the data.  Ideally these data will help you decide who the best candidate for Governor is.  It is always such a challenge to separate fact from fiction in campaign advertising.  Incumbents take credit for positive things and blame predecessors for negative things.  Commercials focus on irrelevant issues to distract the public from what really matters.  And come election day, we are all so fed up with the nonsense that we simply want the process to be over.  But, I encourage you to look at the Report and consider the track record of your incumbent Governor as reflected by the perception of residents in your state on the degree to which they are achieving their American Dream.
